In a world that constantly tells us how our bodies should look, it can feel exhausting to keep up. Body neutrality offers a different perspective, one rooted in compassion and respect, not appearance.

What Is Body Neutrality?

Body neutrality shifts the focus away from how your body looks and toward what it does for you.

  • It is not about loving all of your body all of the time

  • It is about accepting your body as it is today and leaning into gratitude for all it does

  • It focuses on compassion

  • It creates space for peace, even on hard body image days

Body Neutrality vs. Body Positivity

Body positivity is a popular movement across media, but sometimes it can feel unattainable or unrealistic. Here are some ways body positivity differs from body neutrality.

Body Positivity

  • Focuses on loving your body and appearance

  • Encourages confidence and celebration of how you look

  • Can feel uplifting, but sometimes unrealistic on difficult days

Body Neutrality

  • Focuses on respecting your body without needing to love how it looks

  • Emphasizes what your body does rather than how it appears

  • Offers a more flexible, sustainable middle ground

Common Misconceptions

Body neutrality is often misunderstood. The goal is to move away from black-and-white thinking and into a space where each individual has different needs. Here are a few clarifications:

  • It does not mean neglecting your health

    • It is possible to have gratitude for all your body does AND value health and  movement

  • It does not mean you will never have negative thoughts

Affirmations

Shifting our outlook can feel overwhelming, and it is common not to know where to start. Affirmations are one way to begin thinking of our bodies in a new way and challenging the messages we hear in the media. Here are some affirmations to think on or say out loud to begin trying on body neutrality:

  1. My body is the least interesting thing about me

  2. I am inherently worthy of love

  3. It is okay if my body changes over time

  4. I do not have to love my body in order to enjoy life

  5. I can appreciate all that my body does for me

How to Start

You do not have to change your mindset overnight. Start small.

  • Notice how you talk to yourself about your body

  • Shift focus to what your body allows you to do each day

  • Filter your social media to limit or remove posts that put you into a place of comparison

  • Practice neutral statements when positivity feels forced

A Gentle Reminder

You are more than a body. Your worth is not measured by appearance, size, or shape. Body neutrality invites you to let go of the struggle to hate your body or to love your body and into a steadier, more compassionate relationship with yourself.
