Premarital Counseling in Oklahoma & North Carolina
At Trellis Therapy, we believe that healthy marriages begin with intentional preparation. Premarital Counseling gives couples the opportunity to slow down, ask important questions, and build a strong foundation before saying “I do.” Whether you are newly engaged or considering marriage, investing in this process can help you cultivate curiosity, authenticity, and relational health that will last for years to come.
Why Premarital Counseling Matters
Research shows that couples who participate in Premarital Counseling experience greater relationship satisfaction and stronger communication. Through guided conversations, you and your partner can explore topics like conflict resolution, finances, intimacy, family expectations, and life goals. This process is not about finding flaws, it’s about giving your relationship the tools to flourish.
Prepare/Enrich Certified
Our therapists are trained and certified in Prepare/Enrich, one of the most widely used and evidence-based Premarital Counseling programs. This assessment helps couples identify both strengths and growth areas, creating a personalized roadmap for your sessions. By approaching your relationship with curiosity and compassion, we’ll uncover patterns that influence your relationship and equip you with strategies to navigate them together.
Flexible Options: Sessions or Intensives
Premarital counseling at Trellis Therapy is available in two formats:

-
Weekly Sessions: A paced approach that allows time for reflection, practice, and steady growth. This approach can be helpful if you have plenty of time before your wedding day!
-
Weekend Intensive: A focused 2-day experience designed for couples who want to dive deeply into preparation in a condensed, meaningful format. This approach can be very helpful if you are crunched for time prior to your wedding day!
Both options are available virtually or in person, depending on your needs and location. Each style integrates evidence-based approaches, helping you develop a more secure connection, emotional safety, and confidence in your partnership.
Begin Your Marriage with Intention
By investing in Premarital Counseling, you’re choosing to build a relationship rooted in understanding, communication, and healing. This process not only strengthens your connection but also creates a more positive outlook on your future together. Couples who begin with intention are more likely to grow in resilience, joy, and flourishing as they navigate life’s challenges.
Frequently Asked Questions About Premarital Counseling
How many sessions do we need?
The number of sessions depends on your goals as a couple. Many couples can move through all of the Prepare/Enrich material in 8 sessions. Our intensive option consists of 8 hours spread across two days. After the initial intake appointment, we’ll discuss the best fit for your relationship.
Is Premarital Counseling covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans do not cover Premarital Counseling, since it's considered relationship enrichment rather than mental health treatment. At Trellis Therapy, Premarital Counseling is offered at a private pay rate so you can fully customize your experience without restrictions.
Can we do counseling virtually?
Yes! Premarital Counseling is available both in person (in Oklahoma City / Edmond) and virtually (in Oklahoma and North Carolina). Many couples enjoy the convenience of meeting online, especially if they have busy schedules or live outside the local area. If you live in North Carolina, Premarital Counseling may be offered in person depending on availability of the therapist and location.
What’s the difference between weekly sessions and an intensive?
Weekly sessions provide a slower pace, giving you time to practice new skills between meetings. An intensive offers concentrated time over a weekend, helping couples cover more ground in a shorter period. Both formats achieve the same goals and use the same materials.

When should we start Premarital Counseling?
Ideally, couples begin Premarital Counseling several months before their wedding. However, it’s never too early or too late to invest in your relationship. Whether you’re engaged, newly married, or seriously considering marriage, Premarital Counseling can help you enter the next stage of your relationship with confidence and clarity.
What is the cost of premarital counseling?
Regardless of the approach (weekly sessions or weekend intensive), the initial intake appointment is $170 for a 90-minute session. If you choose to do ongoing sessions they are 50 minutes at our standard rate of $145 and the couple must cover the $35 Prepare/Enrich assessment fee. The 2-day weekend intensive is $1,535 and includes the Prepare/Enrich assessment fee.
