Grief & Trauma
Therapy in Edmond, OK

Loss and trauma are part of being human, but that does not make them any less painful to live through. Grief can come when someone or something precious is taken from us. Trauma comes when we experience a violation, a profound hurt, or one of the most painful realities of life, and it changes how safe the world feels afterward.

Whether you are mourning a death, carrying the often invisible grief of infertility, experiencing the loss of a dream, facing a medical diagnosis, or living with the aftermath of a traumatic experience, these wounds deserve real care and attention. At Trellis Therapy, we walk alongside individuals, couples, and families through loss and trauma, providing a safe, empathetic space to grieve, process, and slowly rebuild.

What you might be experiencing if you are grieving or have experienced trauma

Grief and trauma do not follow neat stages, and they do not stay in one part of your life. You may be experiencing:

  • Waves of sadness that arrive without warning, or a numbness that worries you because you feel nothing at all.

  • Sleep may be difficult and concentrating on tasks is harder.

  • You may be grieving a loss others do not fully see, like infertility, a miscarriage, or a diagnosis that changed the future you imagined, and feeling isolated because the world moved on while you could not.

  • You may notice irritability, anxiety, or being easily startled.

  • Trauma can also live in your relationships, making it hard to let people close, ask for support, or feel understood by the ones you love.

  • When a whole family is grieving, each person often mourns differently, which can leave everyone feeling alone or disconnected even when in the same house.

How therapy can help you grieve or after trauma

Therapy does not rush your grief or ask you to get over it. It gives your loss the space and attention it deserves. Our therapists help you process what happened at your own pace, drawing from evidence-based approaches including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to work through trauma responses, your story, and care for the parts of you that are hurting.

Because we are systemically trained, we also tend to the relational side of grief: supporting couples whose loss has created distance instead of closeness, helping partners grieve infertility together when each carries it differently, and guiding families through loss so they can turn toward each other rather than away. In time, therapy helps you carry your grief differently, honoring what was lost while making room for life and connection again.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Grief, Trauma, & Therapy

Is there a right way or timeline to grieve?
No. Grief does not follow neat stages and it looks different for every person, even within the same family. Therapy is not about grieving correctly or getting over it. It is about having space and support to carry your loss in a way honors your experiences and helps you create a life you still love.

Is grief from infertility or miscarriage normal?
Yes! Infertility and pregnancy loss involve grieving a child, a future, and often a version of your own story, and this grief is frequently invisible to others, which can make it lonelier. Our therapists take this loss seriously and support individuals and couples through it, including when partners grieve differently from each other.

Do I have to talk about the details of my trauma?
No. Healing does not require retelling everything, and you will never be pushed to share more than you are ready to. Our therapists work at your pace, and approaches like Internal Family Systems allow deep work to happen with care and choice about what gets spoken aloud.

Can grief affect my relationships?
Very much so. Loss can create distance between partners who grieve differently, leave family members feeling alone in the same house, or make it hard to let anyone close. Because we are relationship oriented therapists, we tend to this side of grief directly, helping the people who love each other turn toward one another instead of away.
