Sex & Intimacy
Therapy in Edmond, OK

Sex and intimacy can be one of the most vulnerable parts of a relationship, and sometimes can be one of the hardest to talk about. When something feels off in your sexual or emotional connection, it rarely stays contained there. It seeps into how close you feel, how you argue, and how wanted you believe you are. At Trellis Therapy, our therapists create a safe, judgment-free space where couples and individuals can talk openly about sex and intimacy, often for the first time, and work toward the depth and connection they have been longing for.

What you might be experiencing if you are struggling with sex & intimacy

Concerns about sex and intimacy take many forms. If you are navigating sexual or intimacy related concerns you may notice some of the following:

  • You and your partner may have different levels of desire, leaving one of you feeling rejected and the other feeling pressured.

  • You may be navigating changes in sexual functioning that bring frustration, shame, or avoidance.

  • You still engage sexually, but the emotional intimacy has faded, and you feel more like roommates than romantic partners.

  • You may find yourselves avoiding the topic entirely because every attempt to discuss it ends in hurt feelings or silence.

  • Or you may simply sense a lack of depth and satisfaction in your relationship, a distance you cannot quite name but feel every day.

These struggles are far more common than most couples realize and they are rarely just about sex. They are about safety, connection, and being truly known.

How therapy can help your sex & intimacy concerns

Because intimacy struggles are relationship struggles, our therapists approach them systemically rather than treating symptoms in isolation. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and the Gottman Method, we help you understand the cycle that keeps you distant. Our therapist are also trained to treat sexual concerns through integrated sex therapy & a Biological-Psychological-Social-Spiritual (BPSS) lens. This means we view your concerns holistically and work to collaborate with other professionals, if you desire, to help understand all the factors that could be contributing to your concerns.

Therapy gives you and your partner language for needs and desires you may never have voiced, helps heal the hurts that made vulnerability feel unsafe, and rebuilds emotional intimacy as the foundation for physical intimacy. We also work with individuals exploring their sexuality, feelings about sex, and sexual functioning concerns. If past experiences, body image, or old messages about sex are affecting your relationships, we help you work through them with compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Sex, Intimacy, & Therapy

Is it normal for couples to have mismatched desire?
Yes! You are a different person than your partner and desire is different person to person. Differences in desire does not mean you, your partner, or your relationship is abnormal or broken. Desire is shaped by stress, connection, health, history, and the state of the relationship itself. Therapy helps couples see desire as something that is shaped by context and as a pattern that you can change.

Do we talk about sex explicitly in therapy?
We will talk about what you are comfortable talking about, at a pace that feels good to you. Our therapists are experienced in creating a space where these conversations feel safe and non-judgmental.

Can you help if the problem is emotional intimacy, not sex?
Absolutely! Many couples come to us feeling like roommates, friendly but no longer deeply connected. Emotional intimacy is our specialty as couples therapists, and helping couples rebuild their emotional connection is part of the work we love doing!

What if my partner will not come to therapy?
Considering starting by yourself! Individual therapy can still help with intimacy concerns, past experiences, body image, or old messages about sex. Things often shift in the relationship even when only one partner attends. Maybe, in time, your partner will revisit the idea to come with you.
